Chapter 8

HANNAWOA

The silvery moon began its ascent into the night sky. The light illuminated the Indian village just enough to make out the forms of the long houses that stood frozen in the early spring frost. Barbara’s heart beat so hard that her temples throbbed. She cast many anxious glances through the entrance of her hut. Barbara’s mind raced as the lazy moon rose at an agonizingly slow pace. Suddenly, something cold nudged her shoulder. Barbara froze as it sniffed its way up her neck to her face.

The dogs! She had forgotten about them. Barbara reached out to assure the animal of her friendship. At least sixteen dogs were in their village. How could she sneak out of camp without alerting them? Unable to think of any way to secure her escape, Barbara fervently prayed that God would quiet the animals, just as he had shut the lions’ mouths in the Book of Daniel.

Barbara thought about the last night she was at home with her family. Her father had read Scripture from their big family Bible. She remembered the verse her family had recited together, and she whispered, “… the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments or no.” She could almost hear her father’s voice as he had admonished each of them to always keep their hearts true to their faith, even in the most difficult trial.

“He will never leave you,” Papa had said. Then her family had sung the hymn they all loved so well.

She could almost hear her mother’s gentle voice and see Regina’s smiling face as they had sung that night. Suddenly, the same peace and tranquility that had filled her heart then flooded her soul. At this moment, when she was trying to attempt the impossible, she felt the same divine security. It was as if the Lord was assuring her that, though she felt alone in this vast wilderness, he would never forsake her. No matter what happened, she would not be alone.

She waited as the moon continued its maddeningly slow ascent. As Barbara thought of Regina, her heart ached. She yearned to see her sister’s animated face and her twinkling blue eyes. But most of all, Barbara longed to know if Regina still held on to the song in her heart.

Then her thoughts moved on to Galasko and the last day she had seen him. Shortly after Chief Selingquaw had announced their intended marriage, the tribe received word that Fort Duquesne had fallen to the English and was now Fort Pitt. Though this wonderful news had given hope to Marie and Barbara, the Indian warriors were greatly disturbed with the success of their enemies. They immediately answered the summons of the French and set out to recapture the lost ground.

Just before they left, Galasko turned to Barbara. Calling her Susquehanna, he had assured her he would return with the melting of the snow, and they would be married beneath the blossoms of spring.
